Engagement Ring
So I just posted on another thread about not yet being officially engaged and it made me think to post this too. Has anyone helped pick out their own engagement ring?
Long story short, we are already planning, probably booking the place this week but only until last night did I give him the Ok to oficially propose. (long story involving dad´s ok listed on the other post)
I´m not into diamonds but want a different kind of stone. I like blue so maybe saphire or something like that. This much he knows.
The issue is that I don´t really wear jewelry that much (I actually always thought I wouldn´t want an engagement ring but now I do ) so he doesn´t exactly have something to go by to know what my jewelry style is like.
I used to think it was so lame that the girl picked out the ring because it should be from him and it should be a surprise, etc . . . but now I´m thinking it doesn´t matter. What are your thoughts?

Re: Engagement Ring
When I met my FH I knew that we were going to get married eventually, so I had told him that while I wanted to be surprised, I also wanted a specific type of ring, and that when the time came, he should talk to my mother.
Then I showed my mom a picture of exactly what I wanted, so when he took her out to dinner to tell her he was going to ask me, she was able to show him pictures of what exactly I wanted, without me being involved at all.
When he proposed, it was the exact ring I had envisioned and described, and I had no idea it was coming.
I think this worked well and it is what I would suggest! If not your mom then a close friend would work as well.
HTH!

Re: Engagement Ring
My FH's sister is actually a jeweler. So, a few months before the engagement I looked through a diamond magazine and told him which diamond I wanted. When he proposed, he proposed with just the diamond! It was really good, b/c i liked the diamond(even though it was too big). It's a wonder cut. LIke a princess cut with the corners cut off. And then we went to the jeweler and designed the ring together.......
Unfortunately, when I got the ring, the design I picked out was perfect, but the band width was too wide...and I've never been happy with it because of that...I want to get the ring redone because even though I designed it, I don't like it, and it's slightly too big, so i haven't been wearing it for about a month now.

Re: Engagement Ring
I ended up looking at some rings on line and showing him the types of rings I like. We basically found one that was pefect b.c it´s not too much bling (i´m very simple) and has a light blue stone (aquamarine). Now lets see if he finds something similar here!! (We live in Ecuador). I told him it doesn´t have to be that exact one but something similar would be nice.

Re: Engagement Ring
My fiance surprised me and I was not involved at all in ring selection, we never even talked about what kind of rings I like. While it is nice to have the ring that he picked out, I must say that as a result I have probably spent alot more time in wedding band selection than most other brides I know.
For the record he did a good job, a square solitare that looks very clean and modern, who would like that?

Re: Engagement Ring
FH had been asking me for about a year what type of diamond I liked. It then progressed to what kind of setting I wanted. I actually went online, designed an e-ring and gave it to him.
He got me exactly what I wanted! He picked out the actual stone, but I picked the setting and the shape of the diamond. I was still surprised as to when I got the ring and how he proposed.

Re: Engagement Ring
My fiance took me to the jeweler he had in mind. To be honest, I'm glad he did because I changed my mind once I saw my setting. It worked out very well in the end.

Re: Engagement Ring
I went with my FH to pick out my ring. I thought i knew what i wanted originally, and always used to give him pictures, but its really fun to try stuff on and see what it all looks like.
I wound up narrowing it down to a top 2, and then he surprised me a few months later. I knew it was coming at some point...but i was still surprised

Re: Engagement Ring
We went to Tiffany's together to look at ring styles. I showed him the one I wanted, and then he went to a family jeweler to create a similar style.
Rings are a big investment, and it defintely makes sense to go shopping together.

Re: Engagement Ring
why dont you show your best friend or your mom the typering that you want? look around with them for rings to feel out what kind of style you would like and them have them tell your FH. This way he gets to know what you're looking for but you're still surprised becuase he's picking out the ring
I don't like traditional diamonds either but i LOVE raw diamonds- they come in so many different and are so unique. they look more like rocks that jewels. gorgeous. check them out for ideas- http://tinyurl.com/ycwmjcw

Re: Engagement Ring
i personally invisioned my engagement ring to be different. I always thought i wanted princess cut with the small diamonds on the side. My fh picked out my engagement ring and the diamond is from his familys side. (weird they didnt give it to the sister) anyway. I am actually happy> i am absolutely in love with it and wouldn't change it for the world. though if your fh has absolutely no taste at all i dont think its a big deal if you pick it out. To each his own. Its your time do what you guys want

Re: Engagement Ring
on our anniversary he told me i could pick out any piece of jewelry i wanted and i jokingly said "oh okay, how about an engagement ring?" and he said yes! haha, i was so surprised. but we went around and looked, and i'm glad we did because the ring i thought i wanted, isn't what i ended up liking. even so, he actually picked out the ring he gave me which to me makes it feel a little more special, and he didn't buy it in front of me either, which meant i didn't know when i was getting it. i was walking on eggshells for months, hah!

Re: Engagement Ring
I also like rings with blue gemstones. So i usually go for either blue diamonds or sapphire or aquamarine. Among them i like aquamarine the most as they give a simplified and elegant look to the ring.

Re: Engagement Ring
My FH and I went to Jared's to look for engagement rings with a friend of ours who was also looking for an ring to show her BF. I picked out a few ones that I liked, but couldn't find one that "wowed" me. Ultimately it was his decision and I would've been happy with any ring he chose. Luckily, he found a ring that had all the aspects I was looking for (princess cut, think white gold band, and classic look).

Re: Engagement Ring
I guess i differ from the majority, i do think it's lame to pick out your own e-ring, i see it as a gift and a surprise on his part, and i much rather not impose the "ring of my dreams"; he'll pay what he's willing or can afford to pay, it's not up to me to decide his gift to me! And if your man knows you he will get a ring that suits you.

Well said lady! But being females, we have got an envision about our engagement ring and wish to get it although its upon the guy to understand that. But guys usually have least knowledge about engagement rings and so they need to struggle when they need one to arrange a surprise proposal for their love. At such times, a lady needs to guide them with the proper selection.
