Is this song totally inappropriate for Father/Daughter dance?
I didn't want an overtly mushy song, because that's just not me. Not that I don't have a good relationship with my father, just I'm not a touchy feely demonstrative kind of girl.
We originally had Billy Joel "Just the Way You Are", his choice. My mom was creeped out by it and said it wasn't appropriate for father/daughter. FH was a little creeped out too. Plus our first dance is "She's Got a Way", which sounds really similar. And FH wants to play "You May Be Right" at some point, and doesn't want it to be overload with 3 Billy songs.
So my dad agreed to switch, and was trying to think of another song. We have 4 1/2 days to come up with one. He said Sunrise, Sunset, but I don't know how serious he was. Plus the song means really nothing to us.
I've always loved Billy Joel, Vienna. I feel like the lyrics really just describe me to a T. But it's almost a negative connotation to the song...but for me it sounds like when my father tells me to calm down and not be such a basketcase all the time. But then we're back to the 3 Billy Joel songs dilemma. What do you think? Keep looking, or use this?
*************************
Slow down, you crazy child you're so ambitious for a juvenile But then if you're so smart, tell me Why are you still so afraid?
Where's the fire, what's the hurry about? You'd better cool it off before you burn it out You've got so much to do and Only so many hours in a day
But you know that when the truth is told.. That you can get what you want or you get old You're gonna kick off before you even Get halfway through When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?
Slow down, you're doing fine You can't be everything you want to be Before your time Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight Tonight,... Too bad but it's the life you lead you're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need Though you can see when you're wrong, you know You can't always see when you're right. you're right
You've got your passion, you've got your pride but don't you know that only fools are satisfied? Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?
Slow down, you crazy child and take the phone off the hook and disappear for awhile it's all right, you can afford to lose a day or two When will you realize,..Vienna waits for you? And you know that when the truth is told that you can get what you want or you can just get old You're gonna kick off before you even get half through Why don't you realize,. Vienna waits for you When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

I think either "Just the Way You Are" or "Vienna" would be fine. So what that there are 3 Billy songs. I think it would tie in nicely that all the songs are connected.

My grandmother used to call me "Vienna" once in a while when I was so busy as a joke because of these lyrics. No one ever knows the song though, this is kinda eerie. With that being said I know the lyrics and tone of the song inside and out and I wouldn't use it, though I think the other would be just fine.

Does your father have a favorite artist? My mom gave me a list of my dad's favorite songs, so I listened to them on youtube and sure enough, one was perfect (Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle).

Crashing from the 2010 board. Just the way your are is my wedding song. I dunno but to me that's a total love song between a man and women. I wouldn't use it as a father daughter dance.

Re: Is this song totally inappropriate for Father/Daughter dance?
i did bruce springsteen's "thunder road" bc my dad is a HUGE bruce fan and so am i. it is TOTALLY not your traditional father/daughter dance song. growing up i had always said that i wanted to do bette midler's "wind beneath my wings" as the f/d dance - we even danced to it at my sweet 16. when it came time to pick though, i did something that i knew my dad would enjoy. he ended up singing every word of the song!! not so great for pics, but it was such a special moment that i will never forget. i was so worried that i would regret not using WBMW but i can honestly say that i wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
i know what you mean about feeling that it's inappropriate, the song i chose isn't really father/daughter-ish, but theres a verse in the song that goes "so you're scared and you're thinkin that maybe we aint that young anymore" and my maiden name is Young. so i'm not a Young anymore. i'll never forget singing that with my dad. so what i'm trying to say is that if the song "speaks" to you, GO FOR IT!
i was very worried that our guests would be all like when they heard the song i chose, but i actually got so many compliments on how different it was and how it was "totally your dad" which is what i was going for in the first place!
i used "vienna" for my pics during our growing up video and i think it is perfectly appropriate!!
here are the lyrics from "Thunder Road" so you get an idea of how inappropriately appropriate the song was:
The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely Hey, that's me and I want you only Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore Show a little faith, there's magic in the night You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain Waste your summer praying in vain For a savior to rise from these streets Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood With a chance to make it good somehow Hey, what else can we do now? Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere We got one last chance to make it real To trade in these wings on some wheels Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand We're riding out tonight to case the promised land Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road Lying out there like a killer in the sun Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk From your front porch to my front seat The door's open but the ride ain't free And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets They scream your name at night in the street Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet And in the lonely cool before dawn You hear their engines rolling on But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind So Mary, climb in It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win
Sorry this was so long and i hope it helps!!!!

Thanks girls...I also just found one that's pretty nice, Paul Simon's Father and Daughter, I think I might bounce that off him as well as Vienna and just let him pick between the two.

My Dad picked Just the Way You Are for us. Then he asked if we could change it to "What a Wonderful World" - but that is FH's song with his mother

I love Paul Simon: Father Daughter for the father/daughter dance... I also went to a wedding that used Billy Joel: "Lullaby" for a father/daughter dance and thought it was so touching...

Re: Is this song totally inappropriate for Father/Daughter dance?
I am a hugeeee Billy Joel fan so you could play it all night long and I would love it!! Who cares what other people think- its about what you and your FH love and what songs mean a lot to both of you. Me and DH picked out every song that was played at our wedding and it was a hit!
Honestly, when I hear that song I think of the movie 13 going on 30 and I feel like its a sad song...but I love the song!! What about Just The Way You Are?

Just The Way You Are was his original choice...but then we decided it was a little creepy.
We picked a new song tonight...The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra, the uptempo version. Still probably creepy, but at least a little faster.

My dad and I danced to Father & Daughter by Paul Simon. For us, it was perfect, not too mushy but still meaningful. I also liked it because it was more upbeat and I didn't feel like it was dragging on forever! :)

If you want something totally not mushy at all and cute. My Girl- Temptations is a good one. I was originally going to dance to this with my Dad but he picked a different song. But out of the choices you picked, She's Got A Way is good.

Re: Is this song totally inappropriate for Father/Daughter dance?
Hey, Ali. We danced to "She's Got a Way" and played a bunch of Billy Joel songs all night. My principal actually mentioned it at our first faculty conference in front of everyone, "I went to Debbie's wedding over the summer. It was beautiful. They played a lot of Billy Joel songs." Err. I didn't realize that they played that many for people to actually notice. Anyway, I was all set on my dad and I dancing to "The Way You Look Tonight"...but my dad is not a big Sinatra fan and I felt like this was "his song". So, I gave him a bunch of song to choose from and he chose his favorite. These are the songs I gave him to choose from:
"The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yve855NkTm0 "Cinderella" by Steven Curtis Chapman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lynoQXOuAeU "I Loved Her First" by Heartland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fV6fmBerRg "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJMWR4RG5_A "Now and Forever" by Carole King http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efu1uC9DEOU "Times of Your Life" by Paul Anka http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4CIBHLPjBI "I Hope You Dance" by Leann Womack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KFAa40kZ30
My dad liked "Cinderella" and "I Loved Her First". My mom cried when she heard "I Loved Her First", so my dad picked that one.

I say pick whatever you guys like! The most important thing is that the song means something to you and your father, it doesn't really matter what anyone else says! there were some odd parts in the song DH and I danced to but I honestly think people didn't even notice because they were too busy focusing on the dance itself and not the song.
